FACTS ABOUT ZITHROMAX

Zithromax (or azithromycin) is an antibiotic used to fight a variety of bacteria-caused infections. These could be anything from skin infections to respiratory infections to ear infections to sexually transmitted infections. These are just a few of the uses of Zithromax. There are many other uses of the drug.

It is important to note that Zithromax should not be taken by patients who have suffered from liver issues and/or jaundice caused by the use of azithromycin. At the same time, patients who are allergic to azithromycin, telithromycin, erythromycin or clarithromycin should not use Zithromax.

If you have liver disease, Long QT syndrome, kidney disease, heart rhythm disorder and/or myasthenia gravis, you should inform your doctor in order to make sure Zithromax is okay for you to use.

Zithromax is okay to an unborn baby, but it is very advisable to tell your doctor if you are/plan to be pregnant any time soon before you use the drug. Whether azithromycin is passed into breast milk or not is an unknown factor. So, again, it is important to tell your doctor if you are lactating.

The drug should not be used by anyone six months and younger.

You should take the drug as your doctor has prescribed. You have to take it exactly as the prescriptions says; not a larger or smaller dose or for longer or a shorter time than is recommended. The dose may vary with the infection it is prescribed for.

There are various side effects you might experience when you use Zithromax. If you experience the following side effects, seek medical advice as quickly as possible:

1. Hives

2. Breathing difficulty.

3. Swelling in your lips, tongue, throat and the rest of your face.

4. Blood in your stool. Or just very watery diarrhea.

5. Headaches and/or chest pains. Relentless dizziness, crazy heat beats and/or fainting.

6. Stomach pains (the upper part of your stomach), nausea, jaundice, relentless (or even mild) itching, clay-colored stools, dark urine and/or loss of appetite.

7. Harsh reaction and aches in the skin, fevers, burning sensation in the eyes, sore throat, a dark rash on your skin (that spreads mostly to the upper body parts. This can cause blisters to form and peel).

8. Vaginal discharge and/or itching.

There are drugs that could react with Zithromax. It is important to tell your doctor of all the medication that you are taking before you begin using Zithromax. Some of the drugs that can cause negative reactions when taken together with Zithromax include:

1. Droperidol

2. Chlorpromazine, thioridazine, haloperidol, pimozide and mesoridazine.

3. Methadone

4. Amiodarone, sotalol, disopyramide, quinidine, dofetilide, procainamide, flecainide and ibutilide.

5. Other antibiotics

6. Chloroquine, halofantrine

7. Citalopram, escitalopram

8. Coumadin, warfarin

These are by far not the only drugs that mix terribly with Zithromax. There are other drugs, so it is imperative you inform your doctor of any and all the medication you are taking. The most important drugs to mention would be other antibiotics you may be on, antidepressants, cancer medication and/or any heart medication. Multiple antibiotics should not be taken together.
