Levitra is the brand name for a drug called Vardenafil (not to be confused with Sildenafil which is the active drug in Viagra) . It is also known as Staxyn in India and Vivanza in Italy. Often both Vivanza and Levitra can be found side by side in Australia and European countries due to parallel import peculiarities but they are both essentially the same thing.
Levitra is a medicine used to treat erectile disfunction in men. Erectile dysfunction is a condition where the man is unable to either obtain or maintain an erection of the penis long enough to complete sexual intercourse. The causes of erectile dysfunction can be varied, both emotional and physical but Levitra works in most cases because of its specific function on the blood vessels.
It is available in small round tablet form in doses of 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. The usual starting dosage is 10 mg taken orally. The drug acts by relaxing and expanding the blood vessels in the penis and surrounding tissue. This allows more blood into the area and thus makes for an easier and firmer erection. Sexual arousal does however still need to be present for the drug to be effective. Because of its slightly longer active period compared to Sildenafil, Levitra is also prescribed for treatment of premature ejaculation and has been shown to significantly extend the length of time between penetration and orgasm/ejaculation.

Side effects are similar to all drugs in the class of ‘PDE5 inhibitor’. The most frequent adverse reaction to Levitra in particular is nausea but this is still quite rare and does tend to pass in a matter of hours. Less frequent symptoms are back pain and abdominal pain, raised blood pressure and priapism. The latter is an emergency condition and very painful and for which medical treatment should be sought immediately. There is an extremely small chance that the drug will cause a heart attack but the rates compare favourably with other medications and patients should not be unduly worried. As with all medication however, medical advice should be sought first and your doctor will be able to advise on any specific contra-indications for you. There are some medications where it would not be advisable to also take Levitra , principally nitrate medications where the combination can give rise to dangerously low blood pressure.
Levitra should be taken with water approximately one to two hours prior to sexual activity and the maximum usage should be once only in any 24 hour period. Not all dosages are available in every country and there is also now a version which dissolves on the tongue for convenience.
