Viagra is the brand name of the drug Sildenafil, discovered by scientists working at Pfizer Inc, with research beginning in the mid 1980s. The drug was originally developed as a treatment for angina and high blood pressure. After extensive clinical trials, the drug was found to have little effect in treating angina and high blood pressure. A noted side effect though was observed that it caused strong penile erections in patients treated with the drug. The drug works by preventing the body from shutting down the flow of blood to the penis, which is usually the main cause of erectile dysfunction in men.
Pfizer decided to switch course and market the drug as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. They were awarded the patent on the drug in 1996 and were granted license to sell the drug in the United States of America in 1998. Pfizer decided to make the tablets a light blue colour and give them a diamond shape to make them stand out. This design would become iconic and make the drug famous.

It was launched with great fanfare and interest from both the media and public alike, with strong sales as soon as the drug was made available. In most countries Viagra was only made available through a prescription issued by a doctor; it could not be bought over the counter. This didn’t stop Viagra becoming a sensation though and by the turn of the millennium the drug had captured 92% of the erectile dysfunction market. This was helped by high profile adverts and endorsements, most notably by famous soccer star Pelé.
Although the drug was meant to be taken for erectile dysfunction, it found plenty of other uses not envisioned by Pfizer. It was taken recreationally for sexual intercourse as it could enable men to perform longer. It also has found use amongst professional athletes as a performance enhancing drug due to the way it opens up the red blood cells in the body.
e This means other companies can produce generic versions of Sildenafil at a much lower cost. Pfizer still retains control the trademark Viagra though, and continues to sell it to customers, including directly through it’s website.
