Doxycycline is a miracle drug that has been around since the early 1960s. It is one of those unsung heroes like aspirin that has a myriad of uses and is without the horrendous side effects of many of the better known drugs on the market. Put simply, doxycycline works by preventing bacteria from growing and spreading. This drug both prevents and attacks bacteria which plague us in so many ways. Keep in mind that it is not effective for flu or other viral infections which are caused by viruses as opposed to bacteria. Since it is a broad-spectrum antibiotic doxycycline has a variety of uses and more are discovered each year.
Doxycycline belongs to the group of medications called tetracycline antibiotics. As such it specializes in targeting infections which we might often think of as including pneumonia, like Streptococcus pneumonia and Mycoplasma pneumonia, as well as a variety of respiratory tract infections.
But, common uses also include effectiveness against numerous bacteria including sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis which are also treated with doxycycline. Less well known diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, anthrax and typhus are also treated with doxycycline. While exotic diseases often get the attention, it is interesting to note that doxycycline is also commonly used to treat acne and infections of the skin and genital areas.

In 1994, the FDA approved doxycycline to treat malaria. While it is not a big topic in the United States, malaria is a scourge throughout the rest of the world. According to the World Health Organization, in 2012 there were approximately 207 million malaria cases and an estimated 627,000 malaria deaths worldwide. Often those affected live in poor regions without access to antibiotics. In the United States, travelers to foreign countries can prevent malaria by taking doxycycline for two days prior to traveling to areas where there are malaria outbreaks and continuing a four-week regimen.
Some of the latest studies, in 2014, demonstrate a new use in treating the eye. Apparently, a low dose of 40 mg of doxycycline is suggested as a safe treatment for ocular rosacea. This disease affects the eyes with blurriness and attendant dry, red, burning, itching eyes. Studies have also shown an anti-inflammatory effect with low doses which bodes well as treatment for people with a variety of inflammations.
Doxycycline is available by many brand names including Periostat, Aodox, Oudoc, Doryx, Vibra-Tabs and more. Doxycycline requires a prescription and is available as tablets, capsules and syrup. Dosage is dependent upon the disease and your physician’s recommendations. Any drug has some side effects but long-term studies have not shown the severe risks attributed to many of today’s drugs. Notably, doxycycline has been around since the early 60s and has been studied for over 40 years.
For many this little tablet is lauded as a miracle. It is a true workhorse. When you consider the multitude of ills that it treats, doxycycline is in a class of its own.
