Viagra is really a drug that needs no introduction. This is primarily because it is so deeply rooted in popular culture in Australia. The myths and misconceptions have intertwined with the truth about how the drug really works. This has resulted in its initial negative connotations being turned on its head altogether and now it is just regarded as another sex prop just like condoms or sex toys. It is no longer seen as a drug used to treat an embarrassing health condition in men called erectile dysfunction. A lot of men especially young adults see Viagra as an aphrodisiac instead of a treatment for impotence. They believe that it can work wonders in the bedroom or even attain the holy grail of increasing one’s size!
Viagra is marketed by Pfizer as a blue diamond pill. The active ingredient is Sildenafil.
Sildenafil is related to a family of drugs called PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitors. Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (Vardenafil) are also members of this family. Viagra was approved for prescribed use by the Australian Federal and Drug Administration in 1998. The drug is available in sizes of 25, 50 and 100 mg. A smaller dose may be indicated for people with health conditions or in cases where the required effect can be achieved with a lower dose.

How to use Viagra?
Viagra takes up to 1 hour to take effect, although it will be longer after a meal.
It should not be used when serious health conditions are present such as heart disease, liver and kidney problems. Side effects include headaches and hot flushes.
Viagra works by relaxing the muscles and increasing blood flow to the penis. It is associated with increasing levels of a substance called cGMP(cyclic guanosine monophosphate). It is low levels of cGMP which is thought to hinder a full erection taking place. When levels of cGMP are kept steady the muscles in the penis become sufficiently relaxed that the arteries fill with blood thus maintaining a full erection. However in order for cGMP levels to increase signals have to be sent from the brain to initiate. This means that Viagra can only work if there is sexual arousal. So contrary to popular myth Viagra will not get you in the mood or even increase your sexual libido. Those things have to be present in order for it to work. Viagra only addresses a physiological problem. But it has been reported that it has a psychological benefit in that for men who have experienced problems with erectile dysfunction. They are less likely to get performance anxiety subsequently because the physiological problems are dealt with by Viagra leading to more self confidence.
